Why is tailored treatment important for the best possible teeth whitening result?
Whitening is not one-size-fits-all. Teeth can vary in shade across the mouth, while crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour. Sensitivity levels and starting tooth colour also differ from person to person. A registered dental hygienist has the training to assess these factors properly and, where appropriate, can use a combination of gel strengths to help achieve the most even and suitable result possible.
Example of a Tailored Whitening Treatment Plan.
This example shows how whitening plans can be adjusted depending on starting shade, sensitivity levels, existing dental work and the type of result each client is hoping to achieve.
Case 1. Mixed Strength Whitening Approach.

Where We Started.
-
The upper right crown matched the darker surrounding teeth.
-
There was a shade difference between the upper and lower two front teeth which were already lighter than the crown.
Treatment Steps.
Step 1. 44% CP (approx. 15% HP) was used on the four front teeth only so shade change was minimal.
Step 2. 35% HP was used on the remaining darker teeth.
Step 3. Whitening was monitored each round to keep the result balanced with the crown.
Note. One tooth had a composite filling, so strength could be reduced if needed to keep it less obvious.

Final Outcome.
-
A whiter, more balanced smile.
-
Aftercare.
-
Pre-filled 15% HP trays were to be used for 3 days to stabilise colour and enhance the result.
